General Interest - It took 2000 years to solve this mystery from Ancient Rome

The beautiful bridge below was built by the Ancient Romans exactly as you see it 2085 years ago.

Pons Fabricius was erected one year after Cicero was consul and not one brick was touched in its lifetime.

Two factors contributed to this longevity.

First, a tranquil life. Unlike other bridges in Rome which have seen war damage, Ponte dei Quattro Capi lived through the millennia with ease.

Secondly, Ancient Roman concrete.

Roman concrete is a beast. Walk through the Eternal City and you will see 2000-year old brick structures still standing merrily.

By comparison, our concrete lasts a few decades before it rots away. Thus for centuries we have searched for clues to this durability, as the original recipe has been lost to time.

And just recently, a team of Italian and American researchers has uncovered a likely solution: Roman concrete is self-healing.
