General Interest - Finally, a real-world use for graphene Every week we endeavour to bring you one high quality article post of general interest

In the early 2010s, the tech boom was in its infancy and excitement for technology was pervasive. A permanent fixture of sciencey press in that period was graphene.

Discovered in 2004, graphene is an hexagonal monolayer of carbon atoms. It’s 200x stronger than steel, and it won the Nobel Prize for its inventors.

Hailed as a miracle material of unfettered strength and sublime lightness, graphene appeared for a while to be the solution for all our problems. Space elevators? Molecular chips? Shuttle hulls? Graphene was the answer.

Needless to say, these original dreams have not been met (yet) but practical applications are growing. In particular, it seems that graphene will help us create … super concrete.

Stronger and more green than the current state-of-the-art, graphene powered concrete will allow us to do with the material what we could not dream of. Le Corbusier would love this.
